Maintaining Operational Accessibility During a Build

Citycare Property is fast gaining a reputation for delivery of excellence in the education sector, with new builds requiring the important capacity to accommodate ongoing school activities during the construction process. This requires a special skill set and transparent client relationship.

The most recent school project completed was Sumner School, in the Christchurch seaside suburb, where the Citycare Property team built a new two storey classroom block to replace existing single storey CEBUS blocks.  In line with open plan/modern learning environments, each floor of the building includes an enquiry based learning space, a seminar space, exploratory learning space, shared learning space and a quiet room. There are also two focused learning spaces on each floor.

Designed and engineered by WSP, the project is a showcase for two story open plan teaching.

Sumner School is not a one off for the business, with Citycare Property having a long standing relationship with the Ministry of Education off the back of multiple successful school projects including Marshlands, West Melton, Waltham and Avonhead. The team are currently delivering several other school rebuilds including Linwood Ave and Bamford Primary, also in Christchurch, with pricing work underway on others.

Following completion of the stage one project for Sumner School, Citycare Property was awarded a second stage of work which includes a classroom block due for completion in March 2020.

The completed Sumner School block features a range of external cladding including cedar, colour steel iron and formed aluminium. There is also a repurposed solar power installation that is used for education purposes and powers a small block within the school complex.

According to Site Manager, Glenn Edwards, there is unanimous approval for the completed new build.

“Feedback has been great on the project which is why we were successful in negotiating the second stage. It was important that we were able to incorporate ongoing school operations during the build process without too much disruption. This included managing Health and Safety requirements on site, as well as minimal disruption for day to day learning activities”.

The Citycare Property team of Shane Wildermoth (Project Manager), Glenn Edwards (Site Manager) and Ryan Connelly (Quantity Surveyor) were responsible for the successful completion of this project.
