Citycare Water is celebrating the extension of its Three Waters maintenance services contract for Timaru District residents for a further two years.
The Timaru team extended its contract with the Timaru District Council (TDC) to maintain the drinking water, stormwater and wastewater network for communities in the district’s 2,737-square-kilometre area.
Around 44,000 residents live between the Rangitata and Pareora Rivers which includes the four main settlements of Timaru, Geraldine, Temuka and Pleasant Point.
The extension reflects Citycare Water’s consistent good performance with delivery of Three Waters services on time and on budget for South Canterbury residents, says TDC Drainage and Water Manager Grant Hall.
Collaboration, excellent communication and good health and safety (H&S) practices are the cornerstone of the effective relationship, Citycare Water Timaru Manager Steve McCoy says.
This came to the fore in the recent flooding State of Emergency in the district, he says.
“It’s all about working collaboratively, communicating well, setting targets and delivering to expectations,” Steve says.
For example, the TDC’s appreciation of the Citycare Water team’s professionalism, communication and H&S measures was voiced during the site walkover after the recent Rose Street water main upgrade, Civil Engineer Felipe Silvestre says.
Old cast iron pipes were replaced with new 125mm polyethylene PE100 pipe along 110 metres of Rose Street, he says.
The project was timed for school holidays to lessen the impact on residents and traffic.
Steve’s team is focused on efficient resource allocation and always seeking to improve delivery through technology.
Renewing skills and upgrading plant and equipment is an integral part of delivering the work in the best possible way, he says.
For example, Water Serviceperson Mario Oostendorp recently completed an assessor training programme through Connexis.
Mario is now able to undertake competency assessments for the Timaru team in water reticulation infrastructure civil works, plant operation, and infrastructure works health and safety.
Also, an upgraded CCTV van and a new Hydrovac machine have supplemented the Timaru field operations equipment.
An example of the constant value having CCTV equipment adds for the team is the camera’s identification of remedial work to improve maintenance workstream planning.
The infrastructure improvement work to support the expansion of the Port of Timaru is one such case where the Citycare Water CCTV crew assessed existing pipelines to inform a work programme.
Citycare Water’s original contract with the TDC was signed in May 2013 for a three-year term and the optional extensions were exercised by the council, with effect until June 30, 2021. The latest extension runs until June 30, 2023.
An additional small capital works programme to upgrade the Downlands rural water scheme, which services farms on the west side of Timaru, is included.
This has led to two more staff joining the Timaru team.
